SPECIES & CARE

# Peach-faced Lovebird

The Peach-faced Lovebird is a small, compact African parrot with a peach-coloured face and lively, confident manner. It needs companionship, flight and engaging activity, while its strong personality calls for respectful handling and planning.

Scientific nameAgapornis roseicollis

Typical adult sizeAbout 15–18 cm long; around 40–60 g, with individual variation.

Lifetime planningOften around 10–15 years in captivity, sometimes longer; individual outcomes vary.

## Overview and appearance

Peach-faced Lovebirds have a green body, peach-pink face and chest, and a short, rounded tail. Captive colour mutations can produce other combinations, but the species is identified by its compact form and characteristic face in the wild-type bird. It is native to south-western Africa.

Despite their small size, lovebirds are active parrots with strong bills and clear preferences. They need more than a tiny cage and a mirror: safe flight, social contact and opportunities to forage and chew are central to daily life.

## Temperament and social needs

Peach-faced Lovebirds are often energetic and bold, but handling style and sociability vary from bird to bird. Some are content to observe before approaching; others are more interactive. Slow trust-building and respect for signals make safer interactions than grabbing or persistent handling.

The common name does not mean a bird must live as a bonded pair, nor does keeping two guarantee companionship without conflict. Social arrangements require thought, observation and enough resources. A single bird needs meaningful daily interaction, while compatible birds still need individual attention and monitoring.

## Typical adult size

Adults are generally around 15–18 cm long and weigh roughly 40–60 g. Their short proportions conceal a lively temperament. Enclosure bar spacing must prevent escape or injury, while providing enough room for movement, climbing and multiple perches. Daily supervised exercise in a secure area is valuable.

## Expected lifespan and long-term care

Many companion Peach-faced Lovebirds live around 10–15 years, and some may live longer; no single figure predicts an individual. Plan for long-term care, suitable companionship, routine observation and access to an avian veterinarian.

## Talking and vocalisation

Lovebirds can be surprisingly loud for their size, with sharp calls and persistent chatter. Individual sound levels vary, but they should not be selected as a quiet alternative to larger parrots. Speech is not a typical guarantee; any learned sounds depend on the individual.

## Intelligence and reward-based training

Short, positive-reinforcement sessions can build cooperation around stepping onto a perch, returning to the enclosure and entering a carrier. Offer simple foraging and safe objects to explore. Teach children calm observation and do not encourage biting or rough play as entertainment.

## Diet and nutrition

A balanced diet should include appropriate formulated food and a varied selection of fresh vegetables, with seeds and fruit offered thoughtfully. Seed-only mixes are not a balanced plan. An avian veterinarian can discuss the individual’s existing food, body condition and gradual changes; supplements should not be given routinely without advice.

## Housing, exercise and enrichment

Provide secure, appropriately spaced bars, varied perches, safe shredding materials and supervised activity outside the cage. Rotate enrichment to maintain interest, and inspect cords and small attachments for hazards. Give the bird quiet rest as well as active play.

## Suitability and ownership questions

A Peach-faced Lovebird can suit people prepared for an alert, lively small parrot and willing to offer daily attention. It is not a hands-off decoration or automatically an easy pet for a child. Adults remain responsible for care, safe handling and any decisions about pairing or introductions.

Ask about age, diet, social history, handling and the bird’s routine. Think about safe exercise, companionship and long-term care. Confirm the availability of an individual bird directly; this page does not indicate that a Peach-faced Lovebird is in stock.
