SPECIES & CARE
Scarlet Macaw
The Scarlet Macaw is a large, unmistakable parrot with red plumage, yellow wing panels and blue flight feathers. This intelligent, powerful bird needs extensive space, social engagement and enrichment throughout a long life.
Overview and appearance
Scarlet Macaws have vivid red body plumage, broad yellow and blue sections on the wings and a long tapered tail. Their bare facial skin has fine feather lines. They are large birds with a strong hooked bill, capable feet and substantial movement needs; proportions and colour can vary with age and individual.
In the wild they inhabit forests and other wooded landscapes in Central and South America. Their social lives and wide-ranging activity are a useful reminder that a companion Scarlet Macaw needs meaningful daily choices and stimulation, not just a visually impressive enclosure.
Temperament and social life
Scarlet Macaws are often described as alert and expressive, but generalisations cannot predict a particular bird’s confidence or handling preferences. Their size calls for respect: a frightened or overexcited macaw can injure someone unintentionally. Give clear space, read body language and avoid forcing contact.
They require consistent social interaction and should also practise safe independent activity. Foraging, chewing and training can become shared routines without making the bird dependent on constant attention. In homes with children, an adult should manage every interaction and provide an undisturbed retreat.
Typical adult size
A Scarlet Macaw can measure about 81–96 cm from beak to tail and weigh roughly 900–1,500 g. These figures are broad; individual build differs. A roomy, durable enclosure and substantial bird-safe exercise space are essential. Consider doorways, furniture, perches and safe flight or climbing areas before bringing a large macaw home.
Expected lifespan and long-term care
Several decades is an appropriate planning horizon, although longevity is variable. Make a realistic plan for ongoing care and a backup guardian. An affectionate young bird is still a long-term commitment, and its needs and behaviour may change as it matures.
Talking and vocalisation
Scarlet Macaws can produce piercing calls, especially when communicating or responding to activity. They may copy sounds or develop a vocabulary, but neither talking nor quiet behaviour can be promised. A house or flat with close neighbours may not be suitable for a bird whose calls are part of normal behaviour.
Intelligence and reward-based training
Training with rewards helps teach useful everyday skills and gives an intelligent bird a focused activity. Work gradually on stepping to a perch, waiting at a station and entering a carrier. Offer robust puzzles and safe materials that can be explored with beak and feet, and replace damaged enrichment promptly.
Diet and nutrition
A suitable feeding plan includes an appropriate formulated food and varied fresh vegetables, with fruit and richer treats offered in moderation. Nuts or seeds should not simply become the bulk of the diet. Have an avian veterinarian discuss the individual’s food, body condition and any proposed change; avoid prescriptive quantities without professional guidance.
Housing, exercise and enrichment
Use secure accommodation designed for a very large parrot, strong fittings, varied perches and supervised time to exercise. The bird needs climbing, wing-stretching and foraging opportunities. Rotate safe enrichment and check the environment for chew damage, toxic materials and escape risks.
Who may suit a Scarlet Macaw?
A Scarlet Macaw may suit a highly prepared household that understands large-parrot behaviour and can provide space, daily engagement and long-term resources. It is not generally a straightforward first parrot. Families should consider loud calls, powerful beak use, mess and the need for trained, adult-supervised handling.
Ask about the individual bird’s history, diet, temperament, training and normal daily schedule. Discuss enclosure and exercise arrangements, household noise and contingency care, and confirm current availability directly. This guide describes a species, not stock; individual birds and needs must be confirmed.
