A remarkable presence.
A substantial care plan.

A large parrot changes how a room, daily routine and equipment budget work. Compare the individual species and your practical capacity before deciding that an impressive bird belongs in your home.

Length alone does not explain the difference

A Blue-and-gold Macaw’s long tail needs clearance as well as room for wing movement; robust climbing equipment and a powerful beak add further demands. An Umbrella Cockatoo brings a different combination of social intensity, feather dust and strong chewing. An Amazon is more compact but still needs activity, confident handling boundaries and room to exercise.

Adult body length includes the tail and does not replace an assessment of wingspan, posture or usable enclosure space. Compare the species rather than assuming that all large parrots can use the same cage, toys or interaction routine.

Budget for equipment that will actually be used

Measure access through doors, the enclosure footprint, cleaning clearance and the supervised exercise area. Sturdy perches and appropriate chewing materials will need inspection and replacement. A large enclosure filled with unsuitable accessories may offer less usable movement than its outside dimensions suggest.

Think about how feeding stations, play areas and safe retreat spaces will work for the bird and everyone caring for it. The setup must remain manageable when equipment is dirty, damaged or being replaced—not only when first installed.

Plan for calling and time without direct attention

Large macaws and many cockatoos can produce powerful calls, and Amazons may also be loud. Consider neighbours, household members and your own tolerance before committing. Neither training nor an affectionate description promises a quiet home.

Social contact should be paired with independent foraging and activity. Consider what the bird will do during a working day and how backup carers will maintain familiar routines. Constant attention in the first week is not a sustainable substitute for a balanced daily plan.

Ask about handling and handover before travelling

Explain your experience with large parrots, accommodation and exercise arrangements. Ask how the bird uses its beak, what body language precedes discomfort and whether it accepts a perch or different familiar carers. Handling history is more informative than the word tame.

Confirm the specific price, known background, established diet, available records and any viewing or handover proposal. Ask what transport equipment is appropriate to the individual and agree arrangements before buying equipment or making a journey. A category page is not a promise of collection or delivery.
